The rest of the world could learn a great deal from Japan. But, their culture is *too* collectivist, so the individual suffers. Meanwhile, the West is *too* individualist, so the collective suffers. Scandinavia has pretty much the best balance in the world, so we could all learn from them the most. Japan is a wonderful country. But it's got some heavy issues revolving around collectivism. Those manners, they're good, but they also teach the child that they don't matter in contrast to the group, leading to a lot of issues. Just more *quiet* issues, usually. Suffering in silence. I'm not against the idea, though. It's a good idea. I still remember in 2nd grade, I thought I was really good at math. Then this other girl got a reward for being the best. Nancy Reis I think it also has to do with the quality of teachers, in my country to teach in schools you can either study primary or secondary education in university or study in pedagogy institutes, and usually the ones that study in those institutes tend to be crappy teachers because they couldn't even pass a university admission test (university is 5 years and those institutes 3 years).
